Seagate have announced that the NSA (National Security Agency), a major US government security agency, have approved the device for use in the computers of government agencies and contractors.

This makes the 5400 FDE.2 the first commercial integrated device of its kind to be certified for use in this manner without any supplementary software or hardware solutions.

Models in the FDE.2 hard disk drive range include:

ST9160824AS   160GB
ST9120827AS   120GB
ST980816AS     80GB

All drives have a 5400 RPM motor speed, a QuietStep ramp loading mechanism and otherwise relatively standard specifications for a 5400 RPM small form factor hard drive.
